Jerry Kleiner's offbeat West Loop lounge
By Audarshia Townsend
For those longing for the old Shelter days -- that late-night 1990s club that put Chicago on an international nightlife map -- famed restaurateur Jerry Kleiner offers the next best thing in the Warehouse District. The old Shelter had a Victor Hotel sign hanging in the VIP room, and Kleiner (who also owns Marche and Red Light in the West Loop) has resurrected it. Housed in an ancient freezer building, Victor Hotel serves as Kleiner's offbeat version of a hotel lobby lounge. Quirky, contemporary furniture (designed by Charles and Ray Eames), concrete floors, Barcelona chairs, stainless steel doors, eye-catching oil paintings and hundreds of black-and-white photographs add to the whimsical decor that's become known as the ''Kleiner touch.'' Each room offers a unique atmosphere, from chic Euro-style to exotic Asian. DJs spin a variety of beats, from contemporary jams to the rarest of grooves. Hungry hipsters can munch on light appetizers ranging from chilled beef carpaccio, jumbo shrimp cocktail and sashimi tuna tartar to a selection of toasted Italian-style sandwiches.
